Apple and pear market access and trade development (AP21001)

Key research provider: APAL
Publication date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025

What was it all about?

The project improved the apple and pear industry’s understanding of potential export opportunities, supported exporters to build their global presence, and helped ensure growers had access to relevant information to engage with export pathways when ready.

The project achieved this through delivering a coordinated program of work across three focus areas: market intelligence, market access and engagement. The project also strengthened the industry’s ability to provide informed input to government on market access priorities.

The project addressed the challenge of ongoing production growth and improved pack-out rates in the apple and pear industry, alongside limited access to export markets. Historically, most fruit was sold domestically, increasing pressure on local markets and limiting long-term growth options for growers.

Over time, the project is expected to support increased export participation, improved market diversification and a more resilient industry. Growers who export are expected to benefit from clearer pathways into international markets, while all growers are expected to benefit from a stronger and more balanced domestic market.
