Which Plant Where adoption strategy and implementation (GC22000)

What was it all about?

This project strengthened the Which Plant Where (WPW) tool and set it up for wider, longterm use across Australia by delivering a clear adoption strategy, expanding the plant database, and improving the online tool so it better supports climateready plant selection.

With more than 4,000 current subscribers, the project confirmed that the WPW tool is trusted by industry and widely used by those who specify plants, helping link market demand with grower supply.

The project combined industry research, user engagement and practical tool improvements. It surveyed more than 250 users, ran focus groups and interviews, and worked closely with an Advisory Group representing growers, nurseries, councils and landscape professionals. Based on this feedback, the project delivered a Key Insights Report, an Adoption Plan, an Engagement Summary and a Strategic Investment Plan. The WPW tool itself was updated with more than 200 new species, five new plant traits (including water use, flammability and lifespan), and improved search, feedback and plant palette functions.

The project addressed a key challenge: although WPW was scientifically strong, adoption and longterm funding were at risk. A paid subscription model limited uptake, and without a clear investment pathway the tool faced closure, risking years of research and industry value.

For growers and industry, the outcomes will support stronger and more informed demand for climateready plants. The improved WPW tool will continue to guide plant selection by councils, designers and landscapers, which will influence what plants are specified and bought. The investment roadmap will support ongoing updates, keeping WPW relevant and helping growers align production with future market needs.
